Do your girls ever get all antsy while you're doing their hair? What do you do? My daughter always picks the most complicated do's and then she gets bored half way through.

So I say to you Beth, YES, my girls get antsy! Especially when I mess up a hairdo I'm photographing and have to start over! Ugh. Well, there's no secret to keeping them happy and patient, because they aren't! Who would be after sitting and having their hair pulled and braided and yanked on for 10, 20, 30 minutes? We know how patient our little gals are, so here's what I do. I've shared some of these before.

If I know I'll be doing something a little more time intensive, I prepare them by asking them. "Honey, Mommy wants to do something really pretty today with your hair for your party/church, etc. Is that ok? It will take a little bit of time, ok? You'll look sooo pretty when we are done!" (Or something to that effect). If they are being resistant at that, then I usually try to pick something quicker. BUT, if they are open to it, I give them the option of watching tv while we do it, or offering a snack. A snack is a clincher for my 4 yr. old.

Another trick is if the snack is gone and you are still working away, let them have your squirt bottle (if you use one) and spray it in the sink. My youngest usually ends up spraying the mirror too, but whatever you can stand. This is also great if you are trying to give them a haircut, and need them to stop squirming. My youngest also likes to do her doll's hair when I'm doing hers. I just open up my big box of elastics, give her a comb, and let her have at it.

There's no science. The thing I do most often is just talk to my girls. This is our time to chat and talk about whatever they want, and most of the time it's enough. My favorite conversations have taken place while I'm doing their hair. Ask them about their toys, their friends, favorite cartoons,etc. Most of all, just enjoy the time together!

Little Girl's Hairstyle - Twisted laces in crown 10-15 min

This is a variation on two hairstyles that I've shared earlier. First, it's similar to my regular Twisted Laces, and also it's like my Side Puffy Braid.

I don't have step by step pictures, but I did a side puffy braid, but twisted it, making laces, instead of going from 2 to 3 ponytails and back to 2.

I finished the ends with a twist braid.

And did corkscrew curls in the back. I have a corkscrew curls video coming soon!

Little Girl's Hairstyles - How to do a Twist Braid Tiered Ponytail 10-15 min

Happy Spring everyone! I'm saying it now, since the last weeks of snow and rain haven't really made it feel like spring here in Utah. We'll see what the week brings, but as for today, Happy Spring!

Today's hairdo is a tiered twist braid ponytail. I like the sectioning like this, since it creates an eye-catching look, or at least she got a lot of compliments on it!

I started with four small ponytails up close to her face, two on either side of a center part.

Then I made three twist braids (see the how to do a twist braid post or video) from the four ponytails. I would use half of the middle two ponytails with the adjoining ponytails to create the three twists.

After I completed all three, I combed the hair in back smooth and joined the twist braids into a low ponytail, leaving in their secured ends.

I then took another elastic and wrapped it around where all the twist braids ended, creating another section in her ponytail.

Then I finished the ponytail with twist braids down the end. I did three, but do as many or as little as look good.

Super easy!

Little Girl's Hairstyles - How to do a Minnie Mouse Hair Do 7-10 min

How to make your child's hair look like Minnie Mouse....or so says my husband when he saw my daughter today! This is similar to the poof I used in the Thumbelina hair do a little while back. It's seriously so easy I didn't put step by step pictures, but I'll still explain what I did.

I parted her (wet) hair in front middle back to her crown. I put in two elastics, and on the last pull through, I only pulled up about 2 inches of hair (less or more depending on your daughter's hair length). This is the same thing you do in the Thumbelina hairdo. Fan out the part you've left. This makes the 'ears'.

 

Then make another parting in the middle back of her head, and put in a single elastic.

Then I gathered all the rest of the hair into another low ponytail, and put it into a stuffed bun, or you can do a messy bun.

That's it! I put in two darling bows I got from Angela's Accessories, and she added her own dash of sass, and she's done!
